Kanjuro-sama!!!!!
It's interesting how different the stage was decorated for Tamasaburo san's version. Was this the set for a live perfomance or was it specifically made for being taped? In some ways it's very beautiful and it suits Tamasaburo's version well, but it feels slightly ostentatious compared to what Shikan used. I was moved by the way Shikan ended the dance, hiding under the robe in sorrow and shame, rather than posing more languidly. However I can't deny that Tamasaburo's skills as an Onnagata brought to life the phantom presence of Yasuna's lover. Even when he is not not wearing the Uchikake one can feel a feminine presence in the scene, and when most of his body was covered by the red Uchikakae at the end of the dance its almost as if the spirit of his lover is possessing him, and providing some comfort in his despair. A very sorrowful dance with a wide range of interpretations. I hope to see it someday.
Tamasaburō's performance was recorded on a film studio, for a collection of dances to be released on DVD. It has a cinematic style in the stage setting and camera work that is very unusual in kabuki. I'd personally prefer a straightforward live stage performance, but I have to say that this video has a unique charm. I had the pleasure of watching him perform Yasuna at the Kabuki-za in 2019, and he used a very austere stage setting, similar to Shikan VII. His dancing looked to me much less glamorous and romantic than in the 90s (when he recorded the version seen on this video), and his approach to Yasuna seemed to me much more bleak and tragic, almost with a depressive quality. I agree very much with your observations about Tamasaburō's Yasuna, and I think that Nizaemon's performance, coming from a male role specialist, offers a perfect contrast. I haven't had the chance to see many different actors dance this role, but it seems that performances from onnagata or tachiyaku actors fall into two completely different categories. Perhaps for that reason, actors capable of playing both are generally preferred for this type of dance.
Africancer white.
How di they keep the costumes clean or do they use easy clean fabrics like polyester or cotton? Thank you very much!!
I am hardly an expert, but the NHK program Kabuki Kool has done a few episodes on costumes so I will recount what I remember. Most costumes are silk, but I'm sure that the underlayers are cotton. These costumes can't just be tossed in the washing machine, but because the white makeup gets on the collars and sleeves, the people in charge of the costume use benzene to get the makeup out after the show. I think after a while the costumes must be dry cleaned, but not too often because the undelayers of the actors absorb most of the sweat and oils, keeping the hard-to clean outer robes from getting soiled.
@@stanleygagner arigato gozimasu!! I'll have to get some!! Thank you so much!!
Beautiful!
Tomu Uchida in 1964 made a film named Koi yakoi Yasuna koi. Aka The Mad Fox. It was a hidden gem❤. Okawa Hashizo was perfect in that film. So sad and haunting!🎉 Glad to see this story here.
It is one of the most beautiful and perhaps saddest dances in Kabuki. The story, movements and expressions during the dance are what make this dance unique and incredible. And that's why I have a doubt: one of the most famous actors to do this dance is Kataoka Nizaemon XV and I remember he chose Yasuna as part of his Shūmei in 1998. Do you know if there is any video about Kataoka Nizaemon XV's Shūmei?
So far I haven't been able to find any, but I'll let you know if I can find any (I'd also make a video covering the shūmei, most likely)!
I love Yasuna played by Hashizo Okawa II
Me too! Such an elegant Yasuna... I wish we had full stage performances of him and the other students of Kikugorō VI to compare, particularly Baikō VII.
@@KabukiInDepth that would have been amazing!
I will watch in contemplation, my mother's husband is passing. thank you.

Do they still use onnagata ? Or real women ? Haven't found anything about it.
Yes, male onnagata actors are still the norm, although on a few occasions the daughters of actors can play some roles.
@@KabukiInDepth Thank you for the answer, I learned a bit about Kabuki while reading a book about Ukiyo-e with many actors depicted in it.
Please put lots of full length Kabuki Plays with a briefing and subtitles in english.
Onoe UkonII is very talented and it was a joy to learn more about his work. Thanks again for the great video!
kunitsu gami gonna make me watch kabuki now
Excellent video as always, brother, but I'll tell you the truth: I felt really sorry for Onoe Maholo when he mentioned that he felt bitter because of Renjishi. Maholo shouldn't feel this way, because as Ukon II mentioned, a few Kabuki actors also have the same situation as him (that is, not being the son of a Kabuki actor). If we look at the history of Kabuki, some of the most famous actors were not born as children of Kabuki actors, such as Bandō Tamasaburō V (whose biological parents owned a Ryōtei restaurant in Tokyo) or Kataoka Ainosuke VI (whose biological parents owned a screw factory in Sakai, a city near Osaka). So I think what Maholo should show is that what he lacks in lineage, he can make up for in talent, just like Ukon II, Tamasaburō V and Ainosuke VI, do you agree? Speaking of Ukon II, I have a doubt here: if Ukon II reaches the same level as Danjuro XIII, Ainosuke VI or Kikunosuke V, do you think he will change his name or possibly keep his current name (like the case of Tamasaburō V )?
I wish I could remember names. Sounds so fun to see an actor and know who the hell he is.
You are definitely right, but it is hard to rationalize those things at such a young age. As one of the interviews mentioned, most actors of his age have been recently performing Renjishi with their fathers (Kantarō III, Chōzaburō II, Ushinosuke VII, Shinnosuke VIII this fall...), so it is understandable that he might feel a bit left out. There are not many obvious name options for him, although it would be cool if they revived some historical Otowaya name for him, such as Taganojō, Kikujirō, Eizaburō...
I'm sure you'll get the hang of it soon enough! At first it seems like an overwhelming amount of strange names, generation numbers and obscure guilds, but as you fall down the kabuki rabbit hole, before you realize it you can spot the top actors under any combination of costumes and makeup.
Hi there! I always wondered what the black, fishnet like long-sleeved garment is called (here worn under the yoten) and what material it is made of. At 7:46 min. Perhaps you know the answer. Thank you very much in advance and greetings to you!
what is the main musical accompaniment used for Omatsuri is there any chance of recording of the music itself ?
It uses Kiyomoto music, written by Kiyomoto Saibē for the premiere. I looked for it to use as background music for the video, but I couldn't find any recordings, I'm afraid. I ended up using the music for Kanda Matsuri instead.
Very authentic to say the least. Whoever conceptualize this, must have been very visionary.
Geisha dances are performed with more quality and delicacy by onnagata than by geishas, honestly.
I adore the idea that a bunch of actors goofing around backstage after a show turns into a treasured public dance.
My favorite part about the Omatsuri dance is when the kakegoe “Mattemashita!!” Is said And the actor responds
just saw this in Osaka
Brother, I have always loved this Kabuki tradition and my favorite dance from this tradition is Omatsuri, mainly because it combines dance and Tachimawari (fight choreography). I even remember watching one of these scenes starring Kataoka Nizaemon XV and seeing how magical and incredible it was to mix dance and fight in the same scene. By the way, I have a question here related to the Yorozuya house's Shūmei that is currently occurring: in Nakamura Hayato's future Shūmei, what is the possible name he should take in his prolific career as a Kabuki actor? Nakamura Kinnosuke III or Yorozuya Kinnosuke II?
My guess would be Nakamura Kinnosuke III, as there are no other obvious names available. Yorozuya Kinnosuke would be unnecessarily confusing, although the Kikugorō family has already set precedent.
:o i thought it was a mask at first..
Kabuki is at least 1000x times better than western operas
"Is Kabuki worth it?" ..what an idiotic question.

Amazing
Kabuki is relevant in our current time.
Kathakali from India shares similarity with Kabuki. Kathakali is the performance of Hindu legends and mythics. And I love both!
One of my favourite stage designs. I love how it contributes to immersion, but also allows the gorgeous costumes to be appreciated even better!
This was a very informative video: many thanks! Are/were there hakama that were more skirt-like instead of being giant trousers? I may have seen them in martial arts or Buddhist temples. I know sumo wrestlers and others wear kamishimo while participating in the bean-throwing festival at the new year; sometimes bright pink ones!
Thank you for watching! It is a bit confusing, because some hakama are designed to look like a skirt, such as the hibakama worn by miko at Shinto shrines, but they are actually trousers. The same happens with the hakama used in some martial arts, such as kyūdō. That said, there might be examples in the past, the history of clothing in Japan is extremely complex and varied!
Let the women ACT!! For crying out loud, don't you think they know?
Thank you! I love learning about the costumes. They are such an important part of the whole art of Kabuki.
I want that dude as a FromSoftware boss
I could have watched this for an hour, how wonderful! And I applaud the use of the arrows, there is no confusion and learning is much easier..please continue with these terrific videos! Thank you…from Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA…
Fabulous!
Very interesting. I figured they were exaggerated at least a little, but learning that some of the pieces worn are _purely_ fantasy was surprising.
